Can you use a steam mop for carpet cleaning?
Forget the expensive steam cleaners that you have to rent or buy and then lug around your house. If you own a steam mop, you can use it to steam clean your carpets without all of the heavy equipment and special cleaning solutions. Here are some tips for using your steam mop for carpet cleaning.
Pre-Treat Your Carpet
Most steam mops are recommended for getting out fresh or wet stains in the carpet. If you are going to clean a carpet with set in stains, consider spraying some pre-treatment solutions on the carpet before you clean it to help lift out set in stains. Many options are available in a number of different price ranges online or in stores.
Use the Attachment
A special attachment for carpet or soft surfaces is included with most steam mops. Usually the attachment is some kind of a sanitising tray or other attachment that will allow your steam mop to glide easily over the carpet while releasing steam. Failing to use the attachment when you clean will make it more difficult for your to clean the carpet and it may damage your steam mop.
Follow the Instructions
Although it is simple to use most steam mops to clean your carpet, each brand and model of steam mop is a little different. The owner's manual you received with your steam mop should provide clear directions for how to clean your carpet using the mop and necessary attachments. In most cases, cleaning the carpet with a steam mop is very easy and requires only attaching the necessary equipment to your steam mop and gliding the steam mop slowly and carefully across the area to be cleaned.
When steam cleaning your carpet with the steam mop, you can focus on areas with stains by holding the steam mop over these areas for several seconds and even pressing gently down on the stains in this area. You can also work to get set in stains out of the carpet by both pre-treating the stain and doing a little bit of scrubbing by hand before you start steam cleaning with your mop. Make sure that when you're steam cleaning, you do it slowly because the steam in these mops is released gradually. This is not meant to be a very fast process and the steam won't be able to work its magic if you don't pull the steam cleaner over the area to be cleaned slowly enough to let the steam treat the area to be cleaned.
Allow the Carpet to Dry
As with any time you use your steam mop, allow the area you have cleaned to dry completely before you walk on it or sit anything on it. You don't want to undo all the hard work you've just done by creating more stains, especially on already wet carpet.
If you own your own steam mop, you can use it as often as you'd like to steam clean your carpet. Doing so on a regular basis will minimize the dirt and stains in your carpet and make cleaning easier in the future.
